6. UHS among top 700 medical varsities in QS ranking

• The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has been ranked among top 700 medical universities of the world in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject.
• The UHS is the first medical university of Punjab that has been included in the world ranking. It is the third medical university in Pakistan, after Aga Khan Medical University and Dow Medical University, Karachi, to be included in the international ranking of higher education institutions.
• Earlier, the UHS has been ranked among top 10 universities of the country by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in its four consecutive rankings from 2012 to 2015


7. UNGA suspends Russia from rights council

• The UN General Assembly on April 7, 2022 suspended Russia from its human rights council following allegations that Russian soldiers committed systematic human rights violations in Ukraine.
• The United States initiated the resolution, which received 93 votes in favour, while 24 countries voted against. Pakistan and India were among the 58 countries that abstained.
• Other South Asian nations Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka also abstained, although the Biden administration had sent its senior envoys to these countries before the vote to persuade them to support the move


8. US and Nato allies pledge more arms to Ukraine

• The United States will send new weapon systems to Ukraine, Washington`s top diplomat said on April 7, 2022 after Nato foreign ministers agreed to accelerate arms deliveries in response to Russia`s invasion.
• Urged by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to end bureaucracy-driven delays, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States and 30 other countries were sending weapons to Ukraine and that that process would intensify.
• `We`re not going to let anything stand in the way of getting Ukrainians what they need, and what we believe, to be effective,` Blinken said


9. US senate confirms Jackson as first Black woman on Supreme Court

• Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed by the Senate on April 7, 2022 as the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court in a milestone for the United States and a victory for President Joe Biden, who made good on a campaign promise as he seeks to infuse the federal judiciary with a broader range of backgrounds.
• The vote to confirm the 51-year-old federal appellate judge to a lifetime job on the nation`s top judicial body was 53-47, with three Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney joining Biden`s fellow Democrats. A simple majority was nee de d, as Jackson overcame Republican opposition in a Supreme Court confirmation process that remains fiercely partisan


10. Saudi Arabia returns envoy to Lebanon

• Saudi Arabia announced on April 7, 2022 it was sending an ambassador to Lebanon for the first time since a row broke out last year over the Riyadh-led military intervention in Yemen. The foreign ministry `announces the return of the ambassador to the sisterly Republic of Lebanon`, read a statement carried by state media.
• A diplomatic crisis erupted last October after the then information minister was quoted criticising the Saudi role in Yemen, where a grinding war has produced what the UN describes as the world`s worst humanitarian crisis. George Kordahi, who has since resigned, said in a television interview that the Houthi rebels fighting Yemen`s internationally recognised government were `defending themselves against an external aggression`
