1. ECP rejects Sindh govt`s plea for another delay in LG elections

• The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on January 13, 2023 rejected the Sindh government`s latest request to postpone local government elections in the Karachi and Hyderabad divisions, and ruled that the polls would be held on Jan 15 (tomorrow) as per schedule.
• The ECP members made the decision during a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja at its headquarters in Islamabad. The commission deliberated the Sindh government`s request to postpone elections in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions and two tehsils of Khairpur.
• The meeting came hours after the provincial government announced in the wee hours of Friday that the long-awaited local government elections would not be held in the two divisions


2. Pakistan welcomes world help on Kashmir: FO

• Pakistan has always said that it would welcome the international community, including the United States, to play their role in promoting peace in the region, including facilitating dialogue and resolution of the Kashmir dispute.
• This was stated by Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch at a weekly briefing on January 13, 2023 when a journalist asked whether Pakistan foresaw any mediatory role of the US which can provide an opportunity to open the closed doors for dialogue between Pakistan and India.
• Commenting on an article claiming that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was all set to visit Pakistan last year but at the eleventh hour everything got dropped, the spokesperson dismissed the report as speculative


3. World Bank to help rehabilitate irrigation channel

• A World Bank official and irrigation expert Francios Onimus has said that Akram Wah originating from Kotri barrage will also be rehabilitated under the Sindh Water and Agriculture Transformation (SWAT) project, which will enable the channel to carry water flows as per its designed discharge.
• Mr Onimus, who was co-task team leader of the project, said at a meeting of Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (Sida) officials at Sida secretariat on Friday that under agricultural component of SWAT farmers would be given subsidy in order to encourage them to cultivate high-yield varieties of crops with lesser water flows.
• He said that WB would provide technical and financial support during execution of the project


4. Punjab comes to Balochistan`s rescue with 21,000MT wheat

• Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi on January 13, 2023 announced sending 21,000 metric tonnes of wheat to Balochistan to help the province meet its needs.
• Chairing a meeting of the cabinet committee on wheat to review the latest situation of stocks and flour prices, the CM noted that the federal government was responsible for supplying wheat to other provinces, including Balochistan. But it had failed to fulfil this important responsibility.
• `Balochistan requested the Punjab government to provide 10,000 tonnes, but we decided to send 21,000 metric tonnes more than their requirement, Mr Elahi said

5. Sri Lanka to cut army by half after financial crisis

• Bankrupt Sri Lanka will drastically slash its military, the defence ministry said on January 13, 2023, as the government works to overhaul its shambolic finances after an unprecedented economic crisis.
• The island nation is still reeling from months of food and fuel shortages that made daily life a misery for its 22 million people last year.
• President Ranil Wickremesinghe has hiked taxes and imposed harsh spending cuts to smooth the passage of an expected International Monetary Fund bailout following a government debt default.

6. Russia claims taking Soledar, Ukraine denies takeover

• Russia said on January 13, 2023 its forces had wrested control of the war-scarred town of Soledar in east Ukraine, its first claim of victory in months of battlefield setbacks, but Ukraine said there was no takeover.
• Both sides have conceded heavy losses in the battle for the salt mining outpost, with Moscow desperate to sell any win back home after repeated humiliations and Ukraine determined to hold -and win back -ground.
• The Russian defence ministry announced it had `completed the liberation` of Soledar the previous day and that the victory would pave the way for more `successful offensive operations` in the Donetsk region


7. Biden praises Japan for raising defence budget

• US President Joe Biden welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House on January 13, 2023 and said the United States remained strongly committed to its alliance with Japan, while hailing a `historic increase` in Japanese defence spending.
• Kishida is in Washington on the last stop in a tour of the G7 industrial powers and has been seeking to bolster long-standing alliances amid rising concern in Japan about mounting regional security threats from China, North Korea and Russia.
• In an Oval Office meeting, Biden called it a `remarkable moment` in the US-Japan alliance and said the two nations had never been closer


8. Iran hopes for restoration of ties with S. Arabia

• Iran`s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian on January 13, 2023 expressed hope that diplomatic ties between Tehran and Riyadh can be restored through dialogue between the two regional powers.
• Speaking on a visit to Lebanon, Amir-Abdollahian said he hoped diplomatic missions or embassies in Tehran and Riyadh will reopen within the framework of dialogue that should continue between the two countries.
• He also hailed a potential rapprochement between Iranian ally Syria and Turkiye, after their defence ministers met last month.
• Since April 2021, Iraq has hosted a series of fence-mending meetings between the two countries, but the talks have stalled in recent months, and no meetings have been publicly announced since April 2022


9. Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis, dies at 54

• Singer Lisa Marie Presley, the only daughter of the `King of Rock `n` Roll`, Elvis Presley, died on January 12, 2023 at the age of 54 after being rushed to a Los Angeles area hospital.
• `It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,` her mother, Priscilla Presley, said in a statement.
• Lisa Marie Presley suffered cardiac arrest in her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Calabasas, according to entertainment website TMZ. She was then taken to hospital on Thursday
