1. Gender gap in voters climbs to 12.72m
• With the total number of registered voters reaching 112.39 million, the gap between male and female voters has climbed to 12.72 million.
• A document on the latest voters` statistics exclusively available with Dawn shows that the number of male and female voters across the country stood at 62.55m (55.66 per cent) and 49.83m (44.34pc), respectively. The number of transgender people on the electoral rolls comes to 2,489 (0.002pc).
• The document reveals that Punjab accounts for a gender gap of 6.73m more than the three other provinces and the federal capital combined.
• The total number of registered voters in Punjab is 64.35m 35.54m (55.23pc) male and 28.80m (44.77pc) female voters. Voters from the province include 1,851 transgender persons.
2. Pakistan among borrowers eligible for debt service suspension
• With an external debt stock of $73 billion at the end of 2018, Pakistan by far has emerged as the largest borrower in the list of 15 top Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) eligible borrowers.
• According to the third edition of `Debt Report 2020` published by the World Bank, 85 per cent of this debt is owed to official creditors with nearly half accounted for by multilateral creditors.
• Pakistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Cote d`Ivoire, Myanmar, Tanzania, Senegal, Mozambique, Zambia, Uzbekistan and Cameroon were the 15 largest borrowers.
3. Pak-China fiber optic cable becomes operational
• China-Pakistan Fiber Optic Project (CPFOP), the major project of digital connectivity between China and Pakistan, has started and for the first time fiber optic cable has become operational between the two countries.
• This project is considered to be the backbone of digital connectivity and is important for the information technology exchange between China and Pakistan. The digital connectivity technology of China can now be transferred to Pakistan through fiber optics, China Economic Net (CEN) reported on Saturday.
• Transformation of industrial revolution in the age of information and artificial intelligence has converged the whole world at the finger tips. In a rapidly changing arena, Pakistan has to keep pace with this ongoing revolution to reap the benefits by ensuring ample and seamless global connectivity.
4. China warns UK over basing aircraft carrier in Pacific
• Beijing’s ambassador to London has warned Britain against stationing a new aircraft carrier in the Pacific, arguing it would be a “very dangerous move” in a newspaper interview published July 18, 2020.
• Liu Xiaoming, China’s top envoy in the UK, told The Times that as London cuts trading ties with the European Union later this year, it should not “gang up with the United States on the Chinese” with military deployments.
• “After Brexit I think the UK still wants to play an important role in the world,” he told the paper.
• “That is not the way to play an important role.”
5. Saudi Arabia hosts G20 talks on virus recovery, debt crisis
• G20 finance ministers and central bankers are set to hold talks July 18, 2020 aimed at spurring global economic recovery from a coronavirus-triggered recession amid growing calls to widen debt relief for crisis-hit poor countries.
• The virtual talks, hosted by Saudi Arabia, come as the surging pandemic continues to batter the global economy and campaigners warn of a looming debt crisis across poverty-wracked developing nations.
• The ministers and bankers will “discuss (the) global economic outlook and coordinate collective action for a robust and sustained global economic recovery,” G20 organisers in Riyadh said in a statement.
6. World `at the breaking point` due to inequalities, says UN chief
• Saying we are at the breaking point, the UN secretary general made a sweeping call on July 18, 2020 to end the global inequalities that sparked this years massive anti-racism protests and have been further exposed by the coronavirus pandemic.
• Covid-19 has been likened to an X-ray, revealing fractures in the fragile skeleton of the societies we have built, Antonio Guterres said as he delivered the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture.
• It is exposing fallacies and falsehoods everywhere: The lie that free markets can deliver health care for all, the fiction that unpaid care work is not work, the delusion that we live in a post-racist world, the myth that we are all in the same boat.
7. `Double blow` for India as Iran excludes it from gas project as well
• After being `dropped` from a key rail project in southeastern Iran along the border with Afghanistan, India is also set to lose an ambitious gas field project in the country that had been in the pipeline for past 10 years.
• Turkish news agency Anadolu Agency quoted India`s External Affairs Ministry (EAM) as saying on Thursday Tehran would develop the Farzad-B gas field in the Persian Gulf region `on its own` and might engage India `appropriately at a later stage`.
• Last week, Masoud Karbasian, managing director of National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), told reporters that a new operator had been roped in to develop the gas field, replacing India`s ONGC. The field, estimated to possess 21.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, 12.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 212 million barrels of gas condensates, was discovered in 2008 by a consortium of three Indian companies ONGC, Oil India Limited and Indian Oil Corporation
8. Civil rights icon John Lewis dies at 80
• John Lewis, the civil rights warrior who died on Friday aged 80, excelled at what he liked to call `good trouble` standing up against racial injustice to forge a better United States.
• The African-American icon marched with Martin Luther King Jr., was nearly beaten to death by police, and later as a sitting congressman was arrested multiple times for protesting genocide or leading immigration reform sit-ins.
• `From a historical standpoint, there are few who are able to become giants, Martin Luther King III, the oldest son of the civil rights icon, told CNN. `
9. Hockey schedule announced for Olympic Games
• Following the one-year postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has confirmed the match schedule for the men`s and women`s hockey competitions of the XXXII Olympiad.
• The hockey event was originally scheduled to run from Saturday July 25 until Friday August 7, 2020, with matches being played at the purpose-built Oi Hockey Stadium in Japan`s capital city. Although nothing has changed in terms of the location and overall running order of the matches, the Olympic hockey competitions will now start on Saturday July 24 and conclude on Friday August 6, 2021, the FIH said in a press release.
10. Ex-Aussie stalwart Barry Jarman passes away
• Former Australian Test wicket-keeper and ex-International Cricket Council match referee Barry Jarman has died at the age of 84.
• The South Australian Cricket Association said Jarman died on July 18, 2020 but they did not give further details.
• `We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Barry Jarman, the 33rd captain of the Australian Men`s Test team, aged 84,` Cricket Australia said on Twitter. `We pass our deepest sympathies to his wife Gaynor and children Kristen, Gavin, Jason and Erin.
