1. Al Khalid-I tank inducted in Armoured Corps Regiment
• The Army on July 28, 2020 inducted Al Khalid-I main battle tank in Armoured Corps Regiment.
• The handing over ceremony of the tank, which is an upgraded version of Al Khalid tank, was held at Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT), the largest state-owned manufacturer of defence products.
• Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa was the chief guest at the ceremony.
• Speaking on the occasion, Gen Bajwa said Pakistan, if provoked by the adversary a reference to India would respond with full force.
2. Zalmay Khalilzad delays visit to Pakistan
• US top peace negotiator for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad yesterday changed his itinerary for talks with the Pakistani leaders as he delayed his visit to Islamabad.
• The US Special Envoy was expected to arrive in Islamabad on July 28 for talks but had to make last-minute changes.
• The US envoy is in the region in efforts to jump-start negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban as the insurgents offered a conciliatory message ahead of Eidul Azha.
3. Afghan talks back on track as new ceasefire agreed
• Long-delayed peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban appeared back on track on July 28, 2020 after President Ashraf Ghani signalled negotiations could start next week and the two foes agreed to a three-day ceasefire.
• The truce would start on Friday, marking the first day of Eidul Azha, and continue for the duration of the religious holiday. The Taliban proposed the ceasefire after Ghani described progress in a contentious prisoner exchange that has thrown up numerous hurdles to talks starting.
• `To demonstrate the government`s commitment to peace, the Islamic Republic will soon complete the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners,` Ghani told officials, referring to the number of insurgent inmates the government originally pledged to free under the auspices of a US-Taliban deal in February
4. Malaysian ex-PM Najib sentenced to 12 years in jail over 1MDB scandal
• Former Malaysian leader Najib Razak was sentenced on July 28, 2020 to 12 years in jail on corruption charges linked to the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal that led to the downfall of his government two years ago.
• The ex-prime minister was also fined almost $50 million after being convicted on all seven charges in the first of several trials related to the looting of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad sovereign wealth fund.
• The 67-year-old is challenging the verdict and will be allowed to remain free on continued bail until a lengthy appeals process is complete. Billions of dollars were stolen from Malaysia`s main state investment vehicle and spent on everything from high-end real estate to pricey art
5. Head of China CDC gets injected with experimental vaccine
• The head of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention says he has been injected with an experimental coronavirus vaccine in an attempt to persuade the public to follow suit when one is approved.
• I`m going to reveal something undercover: I am injected with one of the vaccines, Gao Fu said in a webinar on Sunday hosted by Alibaba Health, an arm of the Chinese e-commerce giant, and Cell Press, an American publisher of scientific journals. I hope it will work.
• A state-owned Chinese company injected employees with experimental shots in March, even before the government approved testing in people a move that raised ethical concerns among some experts.
6. Scientists revive microbes from 100m years ago
• Scientists have successfully revived microbes that had lain dormant at the bottom of the sea since the age of the dinosaurs, allowing the organisms to eat and even multiply after eons in the deep.
• Their research sheds light on the remarkable survival power of some of Earth’s most primitive species, which can exist for tens of millions of years with barely any oxygen or food before springing back to life in the lab.
• A team led by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology analysed ancient sediment samples deposited more than 100 million years ago on the seabed of the South Pacific.
7. Iran batters dummy US aircraft carrier in Gulf exercises
• Iran`s Revolutionary Guards blasted a mock-up of a US aircraft carrier with missiles on July 28, 2020 during military exercises in sensitive Gulf waters, state television reported.
• The exercises dubbed `Prophet Mohammed 14th` were held near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for a fifth of global oil output. The US Navy condemned the `irresponsible and reckless behaviour by Iran` calling it an attempt `to intimidate and coerce`.
• The Iranian maritime manoeuvre was staged at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and its decades-old arch enemy the United States
8. Prostate cancer can be detected by a new blood test
• Scientists have created a blood test which diagnoses prostate cancer and identifies what stage the disease is at with 99 percent accuracy. Nottingham Trent University medics and clinicians developed the method in a bid to reduce invasive biopsies needed to confirm prostate cancer. Scientists believe around 12,000 British men will die from prostate cancer in the UK this year.
• Building on previous work the scientists found changes in the immune system can be identified in the blood of a patient. The signals for the cancer are identified predominantly due to alterations in the white blood cells.
9. Olympian Asad Malik laid to rest
• Former hockey Olympian Asad Malik, who died in a road accident on July 27, 2020, was laid to rest in his native town of Sheikhupura, some 30 kilometre away from here on July 28, 2020.
• Asad, a big name in hockey, was travelling with his daughter on a motor bicycle when he met with a road accident. While Asad died on the spot, his daughter has been hospitalized in Lahore. She is in critical condition.
• Asad was the eldest in a family which has produced four Olympians. Besides Asad himself, his younger brother Saeed Anwar, nephews Anjum Saeed and Naeem Amjad have all played for Pakistan which is a rare honour indeed
10. Indian actress Kum Kum dies at 86
• Kum Kum, a much-loved Indian actress whose long career fetched her roles opposite wrestler Dara Singh and ace thespian Dilip Kumar, passed away at her home in Mumbai on July 28, 2020. She was 86.
• Kumkum was known as Zebunnisa before venturing into the tinsel town in 1954. She was admire d for her natural presence before the camera and was at ease equally in a delightful dance number, or with her carefree laughter or in a memorable song that could spiral into a heavier emotional finale.
• `Jadugar qatil, hazir hai mera dil,` was the delectable song with which she wooed Dilip Kumar in Kohinoor. His response was to test her dancing ability with a fabled song set to Raag Hameer by music maestro Naushad and delivered mellifluously by Mohammed Rafi in the same movie
