1. Govt begins audit of oil refineries, companies
• The government has started the audit of all oil refineries and oil marketing companies (OMCs) to rule out the possibility of irregularities in taxes, product sourcing and transportation costs.
• A senior government official told Dawn the Petroleum Division had asked 25 OMCs and refineries to ensure availability of relevant personal and entire record for examination by the audit teams.
• In the first step, an audit team of the Director General Audit (DGA) of Petroleum and Natural Resources will visit Attock Refinery Limited (ARL) in Rawalpindi and Pak-Arab Refinery Company (Parco) in Multan and all OMCs and officials and depots at Machike, Sheikhupura, next week. This will be followed by visits to other OMCs across the country
2. EU-Pakistan business forum for SMEs launched
• The first ever EU-Pakistan Business Forum for Small and Medium Enterprises was launched on September 8, 2021 which is aimed at boosting trade with countries in the European Union.
• The objective of the forum is to provide opportunities to both EU and Pakistani businesses to work together to become engines of development and partnership and contribute to enhancing bilateral trade.
• The business forum will play a key role in bringing together SMEs from the EU and Pakistan to enhance their export orientation as well as collaboration in technology transfer and promotion of businesses.
3. US says Pakistan role critical for inclusive govt
• The US State Department has urged Pakistan to play a critical role in bringing an inclusive government in Kabul as a lawmaker warned that the United States could re-enter Afghanistan if the situation worsened.
• The statements follow assurances from Pakistan`s US and UN envoys that Islamabad, too, wants an inclusive government in Kabul and is willing to work with the international community for achieving this objective.
• `We have been in regular touch with the Pakistani leadership and have discussed Afghanistan in detail,` a State Department spokesperson told Dawn when asked to comment on Pakistan`s role in Afghanistan
4. Climate change has forced animals to alter shapes: study
• Some animals are `shape-shifting` and have developed bigger tails, beaks and ears to regulate their body temperatures as the planet warms, according to a new study.
• From Australian parrots to European rabbits, researchers found evidence that a host of warm-blooded animals have evolved bigger body parts, which could allow them to lose body heat more effectively.
• Climate change is heaping `a whole lot of pressure` on animals, said Sara Ryding of Deakin University in Australia, who led the study, in a press release.
5. Taliban urged to ensure security in Afghanistan
• Pakistan on September 8, 2021 urged the new Taliban government in Kabul to ensure security in the war ravaged country and work for meeting urgent humanitarian needs.
• `We hope that the new political dispensation will ensure coordinated efforts for peace, security and stability in Afghanistan as well as work towards taking care of humanitarian and development needs of the Afghan people,` the Foreign Office said in a statement, which was Pakistan`s formal reaction to the caretaker government announced by the Taliban in Kabul a day earlier.
• `Pakistan reaffirms its abiding commitment to a peaceful, stable, sovereign and prosperous Afghanistan,` it said
6. Russian minister dies trying to save filmmaker in Arctic
• A Russian minister died while trying to save a filmmaker who slipped from a cliff during training exercises in the Arctic, officials said.
• Emergencies minister Yevgeny Zinichev, who previously served in President Vladimir Putin`s security detail, is the first Russian cabinet member to die on duty.
• He was lauded by senior government officials and the Russian leader as a loyal civil servant and a `hero`. The UK`s ambassador in Russia also offered condolences
7. World`s largest plant capturing carbon from air starts in Iceland
• The world`s largest plant that sucks carbon dioxide directly from the air and deposits it underground is due to start operating on Wednesday, the company behind the nascent green technology said.
• Swiss start-up Clime works AG, which specialises in capturing carbon dioxide directly from the air, has partnered with Icelandic carbon storage firm Carbfix to develop a plant that sucks out up to 4,000 tons of CO2 per year.
• That`s the equivalent of the annual emissions from about 790 cars. Last year, global CO2-emissions totalled 31.5 billion tonnes, according to the International Energy Agency
8. Afghanistan`s last Jew leaves after Taliban takeover
• The last member of Afghanistan`s Jewish community has left the country.
• Zebulon Simentov, who lived in a dilapidated synagogue in Kabul, kept kosher and prayed in Hebrew, endured decades of war as the country`s centuries-old Jewish community rapidly dwindled. But the Taliban takeover last month seems to have been the last straw.
• Moti Kahana, an Israeli-American businessman who runs a private security group that organised the evacuation, said on Wednesday that the 62-year-old Simentov and 29 of his neighbors, nearly all of them women and children, have been taken to a neighboring country.
9. Statue of Confederate general removed in US state
• A statue of a Confederate general that became the focus of protests for racial justice was removed on September 8, 2021 in Richmond, the Virginia city that served as capital of the pro-slavery South during the American Civil War.
• The bronze statue of General Robert E.
• Lee, who commanded the Army of Northern Virginia during the bloody 1861-65 conflict, was lifted off its 40-foot granite pedestal as hundreds of onlookers cheered under tight security.
10. China, Japan offer guarded reception for Taliban govt
• China, Germany and Japan offered a lukewarm reception on September 8, 2021 to the Taliban`s provisional government in Afghanistan, following the Islamist militants` lightning seizure of Kabul last month.
• Taliban leaders filled all the top posts in Tuesday`s government list which had no outsiders and no women while an associate of the group`s founder was named prime minister and the interior minister figured on a US wanted list.
