September 24, 2021: National / International Current Affairs
1. Pakistan, China agree not to alter tariff on power deals
• Pakistan and China on Thursday agreed to keep unchanged the tariff and tax policies relating to power sector contracts and arrest and prosecute the attackers of July 14 Dasu bus tragedy at the earliest.
• The decision was taken at a meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). However, it could not finalise arrangements for over $6 billion Mainline Railway Track (ML-1) and a framework agreement on industrial cooperation pending for a long time.
• The Chinese has been agitating build-up of power sector dues going beyond $1.4bn (about Rs230bn), creation of a revolving fund for automatic payments and an increase in withholding tax rates after the agreements were signed
2. Pakistan`s rank slightly improves among Covid-hit nations
• After remaining among top 30 countries having the highest number of Covid-19 cases, Pakistan`s rank has dropped to 31st slot, apparently because of better strategy and policies being followed to deal with the pandemic.
• Meanwhile, First Lady Samina Alvi tested positive for Covid-19 as 2,357 new cases and 58 deaths were reported on September 23, 2021.
• Ms Alvi herself broke the news of catching Covid-19 on social media
3. PM announces dividing South Waziristan into two districts
• Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced bifurcation of South Waziristan into two districts to improve administrative affairs in the volatile merged tribal districts.
• Prime Minister said all possible measures were being taken to improve the living standards of the people of merged districts who had suffered due to prolonged militancy. He expressed the confidence that his government would win the war against mafias and ensure supremacy of the law and Constitution.
• `If we want to become a great nation, which was the concept [behind Pakistan`s creation], we would have to ensure rule of law,` he said, adding that the masses would also have to change their attitude to become a great nation.
4. Anti-terrorist exercise with Chinese troops begins
• The opening ceremony of the Joint Anti-Terrorist Exercise (JATE) 2021 was held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre in Pabbi on September 23, 2021.
• According to a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations, troops from the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) of China and Pakistan Army are participating in the exercise, which is part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation`s (SCO) regional anti-terrorism structure.
• Maj Gen Javed Dost Chandio was chief guest at the opening ceremony, The JATE is being conducted to practise and master various drills and procedures involved in counterterrorism operations, including cordon and search, compound clearance, close quarter battle and medical evacuation
5. ECC okays Rs156bn Kamyab Pakistan Programme
• Ahead of upcoming talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet on September 23, 2021 approved a reduced Kamyab Pakistan Programme (KPP).
• Presided over by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, the ECC meeting also approved payment of Rs131 billion to 11independent power producers (IPPs).
• It also okayed Rs5bn as internal security duty allowance for personnel of Pakistan Army deputed on western borders and payment of salaries to remaining employees of the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) for a few months
6. Chinese jets fly near Taiwan to deter it from trade deal
• China voiced opposition on September 23, 2021 to Taiwan joining a major trans Pacific trade deal as it flew 24 planes, including two nuclear-capable bombers ,into the self-ruled island`s air defence zone, the biggest incursion in weeks, Taiwanese officials said.
• Last week Beijing submitted its own application to become a member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
• Taiwan has lobbied for years to join and announced on Thursday that it had officially applied to be part of the CCTPP, which was signed by 11 Asia Pacinc countries in 2018 and is the region`s biggest free-trade pact, accounting for around13.5 percent of the global economy
7. US envoy to Haiti resigns, slams migrant deportations
• The US special envoy to Haiti resigned on September 23, 2021 two months after his appointment, denouncing the Biden administration`s deportation of Haitian migrants from the US-Mexico border back to their poverty-stricken homeland.
• `I will not be associated with the United States inhumane, counterproductive decision to deport thousands of Haitian refugees and illegal immigrants to Haiti,` State Department envoy Daniel Foote said in a scathing letter of resignation.
8. World refugee body blasts UK`s planned immigration law
• Britain`s proposed law to implement what it calls the biggest overhaul of asylum rules in decades `undermines established international refugee protection rules`, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said.
• Interior minister Priti Patel a prominent supporter of Brexit, where `taking back control` of immigration was a key campaign issue said the current system was `overwhelmed`.
• Instead, she said the proposed new law would be based `on genuine need of refuge, not on the ability to pay people smugglers`
9. Erdogan says relations with Biden off to poor start
• Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he felt that relations with his US counterpart Joe Biden had `not gotten off to a good start` since the latter`s arrival in the White House.
• `My wish is to have friendly and not hostile relations` with the United States, the state news agency Anadolu quoted Erdogan as saying on the sidelines of the UN general assembly in New York.
• `But the way things are going between two Natoallies is currently not too auspicious,` he said
10. Asif underlines unfulfilled promise as Northern trounce Balochistan
• Despite being something of an enigma at the international level, Asif Ali sent out a strong reminder he can be a real force with the willow and the finisher Pakistan had been desperately searching for.
• The 29-year-old batter, one of the stunning selections on the Twenty20 World Cup-bound Pakistan squad, produced a typical act of belligerence to enable former National T20 Cup champions Northern to launch the third edition with a clinical six-wicket rout of Balochistan in Rawalpindi.
