1. Leadership wades in as Balochistan, KP overwhelmed by floodwaters

• As the death toll from the calamitous floods sweeping the country crossed the 1,000 mark on August 27, 2022, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa visited the flood-hit areas of Balochistan and Sindh and vowed to make all-out efforts to compensate and rehabilitate all those affected or displaced by floodwaters.
• In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, around 350,000 people were evacuated from flood prone areas of Nowshera and Charsadda districts, while at least 14 were killed in rain-related incidents in Lower Dir, Mansehra and Kohistan.
• Meanwhile, fears of another flood in the River Kabul were averted after the Nowshera administration and Wapda authorities managed to restrict water discharges from the Tarbela and Warsak dams, preventing water levels from rising further.


2. Flooded lower Sindh reels in pain and destruction

• Rows of improvised tents dot rural Sindh, devastated by successive spells of torrential monsoon rains since July. But Wali Kohli is determined to face the havoc wrought by extreme weather conditions this summer.
• At 7:30am, she is ready to prepare food for her husband, Ganga Ram, and children out of the wheat flour her husband bought. Wali was, however, worried about her buffalo that sits paces away on a roadside facing an irrigation channel. `It is sick and supposed to deliver a baby,` she said while kneading the wheat flour.
• Her house made of thatched straw has already caved in. Its remains are surrounded by muddy rainwater. She lives in a village located on a landowner`s farmlands she tills with her husband


3. UK extending help to people affected by floods

• The United Kingdom (UK) on August 27, 2022 announced that it was providing urgent support to Pakistan after extreme monsoon rainfall in the south of the country killed at least 900 people and flooding affected millions of people.
• In response to the disaster, the UK would provide up to £1.5 million support to relief efforts. The United Nations (UN) was carrying out a needs assessment over the weekend, and a UN appeal was expected to be launched on Tuesday, Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon, Minister of State for South and Central Asia, North Africa, UN and the Commonwealth and the Prime Minister`s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, said in a statement.


4. US donates 9m Covid vaccines to Pakistan

• As part of its commitment to provide 77 million Covid vaccines to Pakistan, the United States donated another batch of 9m paediatric and adult doses on Friday in partnership with global vaccine-sharing scheme Covax.
• The US is the single largest donor of Covid vaccines to Pakistan. Besides Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, Washington also recently donated four mobile testing labs worth $4.6m to the National Institute of Health through USAID


5. ADB to help govt attract investment in infrastructure

• The Asian Development Bank will provide technical assistance to Pakistan on a grant basis to support the government`s efforts to create an enabling environment for infrastructure financing and public-private partnership at the federal level.
• In doing so, the government hopes to attract private finance for infrastructure investments in priority sectors such as roads, housing, water and sanitation, aviation and technology all high priorities in the government`s three-year Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).
• The ADB technical assistance will help the government prepare the project, design, the reform programme, and develop the capacity to implement the promotion of sustainable public-private partnerships programme, according to the project document

6. Pakistan reports year`s 15th polio case

• Pakistan reported its 15th wild poliovirus case of this year after a 17-month-old boy from the North Waziristan tribal district contracted the disease, the National Institute of Health (NIH) said on August 27, 2022.
• According to an NIH official, all victims this year are aged under two years, and the only case outside North Waziristan was reported from Lakki Marwat last month.
• Pakistan reported this year`s first case in April after staying polio-free for almost 15 months. It detected only one case last year


7. Tunisia, Morocco recall envoys over W. Sahara row

• Tunisia announced on August 27, 2022 the recall of its ambassador to Morocco for consultations, a day after the kingdom did the same in response to Tunisia`s president hosting the Polisario movement`s leader.
• The Polisario wants an independent state in the Western Sahara, a vast stretch of mineral-rich desert which Morocco sees as a sovereign part of its own territory. Tunisian President Kais Saied had on Friday hosted Polisario chief Brahim Ghali who arrived to attend the Japanese-African investment conference TICAD.
• In response to what it called a `hostile` and `unnecessarily provocative` act, Morocco immediately withdrew its Tunis ambassador for consultations and cancelled its own participation in the high-profile conference. On Saturday, the Tunisian Foreign Ministry voiced its `surprise` at Morocco`s reaction


8. Russia blocks resolution on nuclear disarmament

• Russia on August 26, 2022 prevented the adoption of a joint declaration following a four-week UN conference on a nuclear disarmament treaty, with Moscow denouncing what it said were `political` aspects of the text.
• The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which 191 signatories review every five years, aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, promote complete disarmament and promote cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
• The nations had been gathered at UN headquarters in New York since Aug 1, participating in almost month-long negotiations, including a final session that was postponed for several hours on Friday


9. Fresh shelling at Ukraine power plant as operator warns of radiation risk

• Ukraine and Russia traded fresh accusations of shelling at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on August 27, 2022, as its operator warned of a radioactive leak risk at the atomic facility.
• The Zaporizhzhia plant in southern Ukraine has been occupied by Russian troops since early March.
• Kyiv and Moscow have repeatedly accused each other of rocket attacks in the vicinity of the plant Europe`s largest located in the city of Energodar.
• On Saturday its Ukraine operator Energoatom said Russian troops `repeatedly shelled` it over the past day


10. Afghanistan thrash Sri Lanka in Asia Cup opener

• Fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi returned bowling figures of 3-11 to help Afghanistan beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the opening match of the Asia Cup Twenty20 tournament on August 27, 2022.
• Afghanistan elected to field and bundled out Sri Lanka for a paltry 105, a total their batsmen overhauled in 10.1 overs in Dubai.
• Left-hander Hazratullah Zazai, unbeaten on 37, and wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanllah Gurbaz, who hit 40, put on 83 runs for the opening wicket to build on the dominance started by the bowlers.
• Afghanistan, in Group B with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, have made a thumping start to their campaign in the six-nation tournament that acts as a tune-up to the T20 World Cup in October-November in Australia
