6. IFAD to begin new programme to reduce poverty, raise food security
• The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will begin this year a new five-year programme in Pakistan to target 1.5 million poor rural households representing 10 million peopie comprising households living in chronic poverty and small-scale farmers. The goal of the new programme is to reduce poverty in people living in rural areas and enhance food security.
• The Country Strategic Opportunities Programme (COSOP) covering the 2023-2027period with projects worth $231 million in commitment and cofinancing has now been placed before the IFAD executive board for final approval, according to the document available to Dawn.
• The COSOP sets out IFAD`s strategy to support the government in transforming smallholder agriculture and eradicating rural poverty within a systematic framework to build climate resilience, adaptation, mitigation and response
7. Honduras and China establish diplomatic ties in blow to Taiwan
• China and Honduras began formal diplomatic relations on March 26, 2023, with Taiwan accusing Beijing of using `coercion and intimidation` to lure away its few remaining allies.
• China`s announcement of the move came shortly after Tegucigalpa said it had officially severed ties with Taipei. `The two governments have decided to recognise each other and establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level`, effective immediately, China`s foreign ministry said in a statement.
• The switch cuts to 13 the number of countries that still diplomatically recognise Taiwan, which has lost several Latin American allies in recent years
8. Kyiv seeks UNSC meet over Moscow`s `N-blackmail`
• Kyiv on March 26, 2023 said it was seeking an emergency meeting of the United Nation`s Security Council to counter Russia`s `nuclear blackmail` after President Vladimir Putin announced his country would station tactical nuclear arms in Belarus.
• Putin said the deployment was similar to moves from the United States, which stores such weapons in bases across Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkiye, an analogy western allies called `misleading` With fears of a nuclear war rising since the invasion, experts believe that any Russian strike would likely involve small-size battlefield weapons, called `tactical` as opposed to `strategic` high powered long-range nuclear weapons.
• `Ukraine expects effective actions to counteract the Kremlin`s nuclear blackmail from the UK, China, the US and France,` the Ukrainian foreign ministry said
9. Israel, UAE sign free trade pact into effect
• Israel and the United Arab Emirates on March 26, 2023 signed a free trade pact into effect, reducing or removing tariffs on about 96 per cent of goods traded between the nations, Israel`s Foreign Ministry said.
• The countries first reached the agreement last May, promising to boost bilateral trade after they normalised ties in 2020 in a US-brokered deal.
• The deal will also allow Israeli companies to gain access to government tenders in the UAE, the ministry said
10. Afghanistan thump Pakistan to claim T20 series
• Afghanistan overcame late nerves in the closing overs to beat Pakistan by seven wickets in the second Twenty20 international on Sunday and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
• Needing 30 off the last three overs, and 22 from the last two, Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi hit a six each off pace bowler Naseem Shah in the penultimate over to reduce the target to five runs.
• Zadran then hit the winning boundary off Zaman Khan`s last over to chase down the 131-run target with one ball to spare.
• `It`s a great honour and pleasure to lead this wonderful team, said Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan.
