April 02, 2020: National / International Current Affairs
1. Countrywide lockdown extended till 14th
• While the existing countrywide restrictions placed last month to slow the spread of coronavirus will remain enforced for two more weeks, Pakistan International Airlines will operate 17 special flights between April 4 and 11 to bring back around 2,000 overseas Pakistanis from different countries.
• Both decisions were taken at a meeting of the prime minister-led National Coordination Committee, which was also attended by Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, on April 1, 2020. To ensure collective decisions, it was decided that the daily meetings of the National Coordination Committee would also be attended by the chief secretaries of all provinces through video links.
• On April 1, 2020, the tally of confirmed coronavirus cases surged to over 2,200, with 31 deaths.
2. Suspension of domestic flights extended till April 11
• The government has decided to extend the suspension of all types of domestic flights till April 11.
• The government had suspended the operation of all types of domestic scheduled and non-scheduled chartered and private aircraft passenger flights from March 26 till April 2.
• Aviation Division`s spokesman and senior joint secretary Abdul Sattar Khokhar said in a press release on April 1, 2020 that the government had extended the suspension of all types of domestic flights from April 2 to April 11.
• However, he added, the operation of domestic flights from Islamabad International Airport to Gilgit and Skardu airports and vice versa would continue as normal.
3. Google launches new features to aid Pakistan`s anti-virus response
• Amid lockdowns during the Covid19 crisis, tech giant Google has launched various features and incentives to ease load on telecommunication providers and to support remote learning and access to correct information in Pakistan.
• According to a Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) press release issued on April 1, 2020, Google introduced new features and resources for users in Pakistan to help them stay informed and connected, support small businesses and to contain the spread of misinformation on its platforms. Last week the PTA had observed the internet usage in the country had increased by 15 per cent following varying lockdowns across Pakistan. The increase, it said, was observed due to a spike in online activities by educational institutions and businesses as well as a `work-from-home policy` adopted by organisations and individuals
4. Education ministry, PTV sign agreement to launch Tele School
• The education ministry on April 1, 2020 signed an agreement with Pakistan Television to launch a TV channel Tele Schools an alternative to educational content delivery mechanism during closure of educational institution in the wake of coronavirus.
• Sources said that Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood and PTV Managing Director Aamer Manzoor held a meeting here at the ministry and later they attended the agreement signing ceremony by officials of the two sides.
• The PTV managing director assured his full support to education ministry in this critical time, when schools and colleges are closed as precaution against coronavirus
5. Japan to provide $2.16m grant for Covid-19
• The Japanese government will provide a grant assistance of $2.16 million to Pakistan to deal with the escalating number of coronavirus infections in the country.
• Of the $2.16m grant, $1.62m will come through UNICEF and $540,000 through the International Organisation for Migration, according to statement issued recently.
• Japanese Ambassador Matsuda Kuninori commended the efforts by the government and the people of Pakistan against Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, as the pandemic was becoming even more serious worldwide, he added

7. CNN`s anchor, with coronavirus, completes show from basement
• A bleary-eyed Chris Cuomo, saying he wanted to be a cautionary tale for his audience, anchored his CNN show from his basement ON Tuesday after testing positive for the coronavirus.
• Via remote link, he interviewed Illinois Gov.
• J. B. Pritzker, an emergency room nurse and CNN medical correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta, who expressed worry about one of Cuomo`s symptoms.

8. World Bank okays another $700m for Dasu project
• The World Bank`s board of directors has approved a $700 million additional financing for 250km transmission line of the Dasu Hydropower Project to be completed by December 2023.
• This was announced by the World Bank at a time the government is seeking about $1.2 billion support from the bank through diversion of surplus or unutilised funds from slow-moving projects to meet additional funding requirements to mitigate adverse impacts of coronavirus threat.
• The board of directors of the World Bank is scheduled to approve about $200 million quick disbursing loan for Pakistan on Thursday.
9. India issues new domicile law for held Kashmir
• A person who has resided in Jammu and Kashmir for 15 years will now be able to call the occupied territory his or her place of domicile, the Indian government stated in a gazette notification on April 1, 2020.
• The government issued new domicile rules about eight months after the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the erstwhile semi-autonomous state into two union territories, both Al-Jazeera and Gulf News reported.
• The J&K Civil Services (Decentralisation and Recruitment) Act defines a domiciled person as the one who has resided for a period of 15 years in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir or has studied for a period of seven years and appeared in class 10 or 12 examination in an educational institution located in the territory.
10. FAO, WHO & WTO warn of worldwide food shortage
• The heads of three global agencies warned on April 1, 2020 of a potential worldwide food shortage if authorities fail to manage the ongoing coronavirus crisis properly.
• Many governments around the world have put their populations on lockdown to slow the spread of the virus but that has resulted in severe slow-downs in international trade and food supply chains.
• Meanwhile panic buying by people going into isolation has already demonstrated the fragility of supply chains as supermarket shelves emptied in many countries.
