1. `Inability` to hold LG polls triggers legal battle

• A fresh round of litigation got underway over the contentious local government elections on December 31, 2022, the day when the exercise was to be held in the federal capital according to a verdict announced by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday.
• In the row, the federal government has challenged the `hasty` decision of the IHC, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has explained in writing to the court reasons for its inability to hold the polls on Saturday and the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has sought contempt proceedings against both the government and the election watchdog.
• Besides, IHC Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir released the detailed order passed a day earlier on the petitions of PTI and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) seeking directions for the ECP to hold the elections on Dec 31.
• The court in the detailed judgement noted that `the decision of the Federal Government to increase the number of UCs [union councils] from 101 to 125 was based on a summary moved by the Special Secretary, Ministry of Interior.


2. Fighting in Bannu leaves four terrorists dead: ISPR

• Four terrorists were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces in Bannu on December 31, 2022, a military statement said.
• During the intense exchange of bre, Sepoy Mohammad Wasim, 25, having fought gallantly, embraced martyrdom, said the statement issued by Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). He was a resident of Khairpur, Sindh.
• According to the ISPR, security forces conducted an intelligence-based operation in general area Jani Khel of Bannu district.
• During the operation, troops effectively engaged the terrorists after the latter opened fire. In the ensuing fight, four terrorists were gunned down while weapons with ammunition was seized from them


3. KP govt begins random Covid screening at airport, border points amid new variant fears

• Amid fears over the new Covid-19 variant, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa health department has begun random screening at the Peshawar airport and on Afghan border crossings in the province.
• The development comes as the health department recorded six new coronavirus patients on December 31, 2022.
• Provincial chief secretary Dr Shahzad Khan Bangash had directed the health department to stay alert in light of the emergence of a new virus variant


4. 2022 ends with deadliest month for security forces after decade: report

• The year 2022 ended with the deadliest month for Pakistan`s security personnel over a decade with the emergence of a new terror triad, comprising Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Daesh-Afghanistan.
• In 2023, Pakistan is likely to endure more violence, a report released by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) stated.
• Security forces lost at least 282 personnel in 2022, with 40 fatalities only in December, in attacks that included improvised explosive device (IED) ambushes, suicide attacks and raids on security posts, mostly in the Pakistan-Afghan border regions.
• The country suffered 376 terror attacks in 2022 out of which banned terror outfits such as TTP, Daesh and BLA claimed responsibility for 57 of these strikes

5. N. Korea fires ballistic missiles capping record year of tests

• North Korea fired three short-range ballistic missiles on December 31, 2022, Seoul`s military said, adding a final salvo to Pyongyang`s record-breaking blitz of launches this year.
• Military tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen sharply in 2022 as the North has conducted sanctions-busting weapons tests nearly every month, including firing its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile ever.
• Saturday`s launch comes a day after South Korea successfully tested a solid-fuel space launch vehicle, and follows the incursion of five North Korean drones into the South`s airspace earlier in the week.
• South Korea`s military said it had detected `three short range ballistic missiles launched by North Korea into the East Sea from the area of Chunghwa County, North Hwanghae Province, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan. The missiles flew about 350 kilometres before splashing down, it added.

6. Croatia set to enter euro, borderless Europe club

• Croatia was counting down the hours on December 31, 2022 ahead of a switch to the euro and entry into Europe`s passport-free zone two major milestones for the country after joining the EU nearly a decade ago.
• At midnight (2300 GMT) the Balkan nation will bid farewell to its kuna currency and become the 20th member of the euro zone. It will also be the 27th nation in the passport-free Schengen zone, the world`s largest, which enables more than 400 million people to move freely around its members.
• Experts say the adoption of the euro will help shield Croatia`s economy at a time when inflation is soaring worldwide after Russia`s invasion of Ukraine sent food and fuel prices through the roof


7. General Assembly refers Israeli occupation to UN court

• The UN General Assembly has asked the International Court of Justice to consider consequences for Israel over its occupation of Palestinian territories, after the Jewish state`s most rightwing government ever took over.
• The General Assembly voted 87-26 with 53 abstentions on the resolution, with Western nations split but virtually unanimous support in the Islamic world including the Arab states that have normalised relations with Israel and backing from Russia and China.
• The resolution calls on the UN court in The Hague to determine the `legal consequences arising from the ongoing violation by Israel of the right of the Palestinian people to self determination` as well as of its measures `aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status` of the holy city of Jerusalem


8. Russian missile attacks rock Ukraine on New Year`s Eve

• Explosions were reported throughout Ukraine on New Year`s Eve as Russia carried out its second major round of missile attacks in three days on Saturday, Reuters reported while quoting Ukrainian officials.
• Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least one person had been killed and eight wounded after a series of explosions in the capital.
• Reuters correspondents reported hearing 10 loud blasts in the city.
• The mayor said one of those wounded by the blasts was a Japanese journalist who had been taken to hospital


9. MNA Jaffar Khan Leghari passes away

• Sardar Muhammad Jaffar Khan Leghari, PTl MNA and Leghari tribe elder, passed away at the age of 83 at a private health facility in Lahore on December 31, 2022.
• Popular among locals in Choti Zaireen area, Jaffar Leghari was born on June 23, 1942, to Sardar Atta Mohammad Leghari and his western wife. He obtained a degree in agriculture from the Agriculture University of Faisalabad .
• Jaffar Khan Leghari spent his entire life in a historical, pre-colonial fort situated in the heart of Choti Zaireen town.
• He was easily accessible to tribal-cum political figures of Tumandar family of Leghari tribe as well as common and needy people

10. PCB restores regional associations, departments; PJL scrapped

• In a major shake-up, the interim Management Committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board on December 31, 2022 decided to restore all regional and district cricket associations and departments/service organisations in line with the PCB Constitution 2014, as the newly-formed administration reverted to honour grassroots organisers, who were shown the door some four years ago.
• With the move, the services of around 200 groundsmen, curators and several other related members of the country`s cricketing workforce will also be restored.
• These associations and departments had been declared defunct with the implementation of PCB`s new constitution on Aug 19, 2019, by Ehsan Mani-led Board and the decision was retained by his successor Ramiz Raja
