1. Govt to divert cheap gas from power plants to homes

• The government has decided to stop the supply of cheap natural gas to power producers who are selling power to the national grid at exorbitant rates, Minister of State for Petroleum Musadik Malik said on April 28, 2023.
• Speaking at a press conference, he said the Cabinet Committee on Energy had decided to end `exploitation` by some power companies by `stopping supply to the rich and providing cheap gas to the public at large`.
• The policy would encourage competition among companies, which would lead to competitive prices for consumers, he said


2. Three soldiers martyred, seven `militants` killed in KP attacks

• The Pakistan Army confirmed on April 28, 2023 that militants targeted security forces in three overnight attacks in the Lakki Marwat district, triggering shoot-outs in which three soldiers were martyred and seven militants were killed.
• In the first attack, a suicide bomber on a motorcycle blew himself up near a security forces camp, located in the Government Postgraduate College, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. The attack was followed by a fierce exchange of fire in which soldiers killed four militants.
• The two other incidents took place in the district`s Amir Kalam and Tajbi Khel areas, during which another three militants, including key militant commander Musa Khan, were gunned down, the military`s media wing said, adding that weapons and ammunition were seized from their possession


3. ECC approves offer for Roosevelt Hotel`s rental deal

• Out of sheer luck, Pakistan-owned Roosevelt Hotel has attracted a three-year rental offer for its 1,025 rooms from the New York City Government (NYCG) envisaging about $18 million in net cash flows instead of incurring over $160m carrying cost for the same period.
• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on April 28, 2023 approved the offer in principle and constituted a four-member committee to negotiate the agreement with NYCG and the hotel`s worker union.
• The meeting of the ECC presided over by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar also allowed up to 20 per cent increase in the prices of more than 150 essential and other medicines and approved Rs1.164 trillion worth of Cash Credit Limit (CCL) for Punjab and Sindh governments for procurement of about 5 million tonnes of wheat in the public sector


4. India, Russia agree to boost defence ties

• India and Russia agreed to strengthen their defence partnership in talks between their defence ministers on April 28, 2023, the Indian government said, amid worries in New Delhi that the war in Ukraine was hurting its own military supplies from Moscow.
• Rajnath Singh and Sergei Shoigu held talks on the side-lines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) defence ministers` gathering in New Delhi.
• `They acknowledged the unique, long-lasting and time-tested relationship between India and Russia, the statement said


5. Russian strikes batter cities in Ukraine, kill 25

• Russian strikes battered cities across Ukraine on April 28, 2023, killing 25 people including five children, as Kyiv said preparations for a counter-offensive against Moscow`s forces were nearly complete.
• The deadly new attacks included a strike on a residential block in the historic city of Uman in central Ukraine, journalists saw rescue workers extracting victims` remains from destroyed buildings.
• The barrage of almost two dozen missiles overnight ended a weeks-long pause following the repeated Russian strikes that had aimed to paralyse Ukraine`s energy grid during the winter months

6. UAE astronaut in first spacewalk by an Arab

• Emirati astronaut Sultan Alneyadi stepped out of the International Space Station (ISS) on April 28, 2023 for the first spacewalk by an Arab astronaut, a moment touted by the UAE as a `milestone`.
• Alneyadi, 41, dubbed the `Sultan of Space` by his alma mater, become the first Arab astronaut to embark on a six-month space mission when he blasted off for the ISS in early March aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
• On Friday, he undertook `the first Arab spacewalk in history,` wearing a space suit that bears the Emirati flag, said the United Arab Emirates` Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), calling it `a new historic milestone`


7. Court bans sperm donation by `father of hundreds`

• A Dutch court on April 28, 2023 ordered a man who judges said had fathered between 500 and 600 children around the world to stop donating sperm.
• The 41-year-old Dutchman, identified by de Telegraaf newspaper as Jonathan Meijer, was forbidden to donate more semen to clinics, the court ruling said. He could be fined $110,000 per infraction.
• The court also ordered Meijer to write to clinics abroad asking them to destroy any of his semen they have in stock, except doses reserved for parents who already had children by him


8. UAE`s first gaming resort to cost $3.9 billion, open in 2027

• The United Arab Emirates` first gaming resort will open in four years and cost $3.9 billion to build, US casino operator Wynn has said, unveiling new details of the project.
• The resort in Ras Al-Khaimah, one of the UAE`s seven emirates, will feature `exceptional entertainment and gaming amenities`, Wynn Resorts said on its website.
• Gambling is generally prohibited under Islamic laws in the oil-rich Gulf state. But Ras Al-Khaimah`s tourism development authority last year announced a new body to regulate `integrated resorts`, including gaming facilities. Preliminary construction work has begun on Wynn Al Marjan Island, set on a man-made and hotel-studded promontory, Wynn Resorts said on Thursday in a statement


9. Embassies in Riyadh, Tehran to open `within days`: Iranian FM

• Saudi Arabia and Iran will open embassies in each other`s capitals `within days,` Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said on April 28, 2023, as the relationship between the two regional rivals warms up after years of hostility.
• Speaking at a news conference in the Lebanese capital Beirut, Amirabdollahian did not give specific dates for the reopening of the embassies. The countries agreed to restore relations in March.
• The Iranian and Saudi embassies in the respective countries have been closed since 2016. The relationship started deteriorating in 2015 following the intervention of Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the Yemen war, after the Iran aligned Houthi movement toppled the Saudi-backed government and seized control of the capital Sanaa


10. India arms Hindu militias to combat Kashmiri fighters

• Brandishing a bolt action rifle, civil servant Sanjeet Kumar is one of 5,000 Kashmiri villagers who have joined all-Hindu militia units armed and trained by Indian forces to fight off attacks.
• Delhi has more than half a million soldiers permanently stationed in parts of held Kashmir, as the Hindu nationalist government presses a bid to crush anti-India fighters.
• Authorities announced the new militias last year, and a deadly assault in Kumar`s village in January prompted him to sign up
