1. Hague court rules against India in row over dams

• In a major win for Pakistan, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague on July 8, 2023 rejected India`s objections to its assumption of jurisdiction in a dispute between the neighbouring countries over the Kishanganga and Ratle Hydroelectric projects, pursuant to the Indus Waters Treaty.
• Deciding in favour of Pakistan, the PCA ruled that it was indeed the competent authority to determine the Kishanganga dispute between Pakistan and India, sources in the Attorney General for Pakistan`s (AGP) office told Dawn.
• Established in 1899 to facilitate arbitration and other forms of dispute resolution between states, the PCA is a non-UN intergovernmental institution that serves as a forum to address the dispute resolution needs of the international community


2. `Sweden must punish Islamophobic acts`

• Strongly condemning the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden, parliament in its specially convened joint sitting on July 6, 2023 passed a unanimous resolution, urging Swedish authorities to take `appropriate steps against the perpetrator(s), including but not limited to legal action and to ensure that nosuchact takes place in future`.
• Through the resolution tabled by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Murtaza Javed Abbasi after a brief debate on the incident, the lawmakers also called for `dealing the incidents of Islamophobia with the same seriousness as hate against other religions`.


3. MoU signed with UAE for alternative energy projects

• The United Arab Emirates will develop renewable energy projects in Pakistan, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged more companies to exploit the country`s potential in the alternative energy sector.
• The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday in a ceremony attended by PM Shehbaz and UAE Minister for Industries and Technologies Sultan Al Jaber.
• Power Division Secretary Rashid Mahmood Langrial and UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure Undersecretary Sharif al Olama signed the MoU


4. 18 die in Punjab as torrents ravage Balochistan

• As rain continued to lash parts of Punjab on July 6, 2023, at least 18 more deaths were reported from across the province, while in Balochistan heavy showers triggered flash floods and brought traffic at key highways to a standstill.
• In Punjab, the death toll over the past two days due to a torrential monsoon spell increased to 27. Unlike Wednesday, rain severity was almost negligible in Lahore, with most of the 16 monitoring points of the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa)recording single-digit rainfall


5. Major martyred in Khyber gun battle with terrorists, says ISPR

• A major of the Pakistan Army was martyred in an exchange of fire with alleged militants in the Shahkas area of Khyber tribal district, bordering Peshawar, the military`s media wing said on Thursday.
• The security forces were doing a follow-up intelligence-based operation after a similar one on Wednesday night on the reports of militants` presence in the area

6. China unveils new operating system for computers

• China has launched its first homegrown open-source operating system for computers, state media said on July 6, 2023, as Beijing seeks to reduce its foreign dependence at a time of increased rivalry with the United States.
• The system, called OpenKylin, has been designed as a rival to the ubiquitous Windows and Mac OS systems.
• Previous versions of the software had already been deployed on the computers of some government departments, state media said


7. India protests to Canada over Trudeau`s remarks

• India summoned the Canadian envoy in New Delhi to register its protest after Indian media reported that posters issued for rallies there and in Britain by a Sikh group`s supporters also targeted Indian diplomats, a foreign ministry spokesperson said.
• `The matter has been strongly taken up with Canadian authorities, both in New Delhi and in Ottawa,` Arindam Bagchi said.
• `Posters inciting violence against diplomats and our diplomatic premises are unacceptable, and we condemn them in the strongest terms.


8. UK govt loses legal battle over Boris` Covid-era messages

• Two UK judges on Thursday turned down a government request to withhold documents of ex prime minister Boris Johnson from a public inquiry probing the handling of the coronavirus pandemic response.
• The Cabinet Office, which works across the executive coordinating government activity, opposed the release of Johnson`s unredacted WhatsApp messages, diaries and notebooks


9. Escalation `not the answer`, UN chief tells Tel Aviv

• The United Nations chief on July 6, 2023 accused Israel of using disproportionate force against Palestinian groups in a recent raid and warned against escalating the violence.
• A large-scale military operation by Israel in the occupied West Bank earlier this week killed 12 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier.
• `There was an excessive force used by Israeli forces,` Secretary General Antonio Guterres told reporters in New York

10. Zaka takes charge of PCB, emphasises concerted efforts to lift Pakistan cricket

• The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) welcomed its third chief in the past six and a half months on July 6, 2023 when Zaka Ashraf took charge of the Interim Management Committee (IMC).
• On Dec 20 last year, Ramiz Raja was the chairman. He was removed by Prime Minister and PCB patron Shehbaz Sharif, who name d an 11-member IMC headed by Najam Sethi, which worked till June 20. And now, another IMC, a 10-member body, was formed on Wednesday with Zaka as its chairman
