1. 95 evacuated as water from India floods rivers

• At least 95 people, including five Rangers personnel, stranded near Ravi and Tawi rivers were rescued on July 09, 2023 as water in the rivers rose to dangerous levels due to increased inflows from India, officials confirmed.
• Many cities in Punjab are expected to receive spells of heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday while Chenab and Ravi rivers will be flooded as an incessant downpour in India`s northern states has increased the water discharge towards downstream areas


2. ADB, IsDB to provide $665m for flood protection project

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) have agreed to provide about $665 million to Pakistan to finance Rs195bn Flood Protection Sector Project-III (FPSP) to build resilience in the country against climate change impacts for improvement of countrywide comprehensive flood management approaches both through structural and nonstructural interventions on integrated and innovative basis.
• Official record suggests that the Economic Affairs Division (EAD) has reported to the ministries and authorities concerned that ADB and IsDB had agreed to finance FPSP with an amount of $400 million and $265 million, respectively, while the contribution of $100m Chinese grant was also expected


3. Emergency in Khuzdar after diarrhoea outbreak

• A health emergency has been declared by Balochistan government in the Aranji area of tehsil Wadh of Khuzdar district after the outbreak of acute diarrhoea and sent doctors and paramedics to the area to provide medical facilities to the affected patients.
• The provincial secretary of health has dismissed services of a doctor who had refused to perform emergency duty in the affected area.
• Two women and a child died of acute diarrhoea in the remote area of Khuzdar district on Saturday


4. Pakistan, India have largest number of employees in public sector: WB

• The Worldwide Bureaucracy Indicators (WWBI) has estimated that in the South Asian region, both Pakistan and India have the largest public sectors with a share of 60 per cent of formal wage employment.
• WWBI is the unique cross-national dataset on public sector employment and wages developed by the World Bank`s `Bureaucracy Lab` According to the indicators, the wage bill in South Asian countries, relative to their public expenditure, is on average, seven percentage points lower than the global average of 28 per cent.
• There is significant variance among countries in the region, it says


5. Uzbekistan holds vote set to cement president`s rule

• Uzbeks exercised their voting rights after polls opened across the gas-rich country on Sunday to choose a leader to drive their country into the future for the next seven years.
• At a press briefing early morning, the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan, announced that polling exercise began at 8am and was set to close at 8pm on Sunday, with about 20 million Uzbeks eligible to vote in Central Asia`s most populous country

6. Ukraine, Poland leaders jointly mark WWII massacres

• A US drone strike has killed a leader of the militant Islamic State group in Syria after Russian warplanes harassed MQ-9 drones over the war-torn country, the US Central Command said on July 09, 2023.
• The strike on Friday resulted in the death of Osama al-Muhajer, IS leader in eastern Syria, Centcom said in a statement


8. Israel will work to prevent collapse of Palestinian Authority, says Netanyahu

• Conflict-torn Sudan is on the brink of a `full-scale civil war` that could destabilise the entire region, the United Nations warned on Sunday, after an air strike on a residential area killed around two dozen civilians.
• The Ministry of Health reported `22 dead and a large number of wounded among the civilians` from what it described as an air strike Saturday on Khartoum`s sister city Omdurman, in the district of Dar al-Salam, which means `House of Peace` in Arabic

• US officials have been negotiating in a bid to reach an elusive normalisation deal between the two countries
