1. Senate body to take up bills on new provinces next week

• At a time when political temperatures are on the rise and warring politicians are not even ready to sit on the table, the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice is set to take up two controversial constitution amendment bills seeking creation of new provinces in the country.
• The two bills, moved by senators belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) seeking creation of South Punjab and Hazara provinces, are part of the nine-point agenda issued by the Senate Secretariat for the March 22 meeting of the law and justice committee headed by Ali Zafar of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).
• Under the Constitution, a two third majority in both houses of the parliament is required to carry out an amendment to the Constitution. The Senate committee members are set to review the bills at a time when the National Assembly has a total of 217 members in the house, 11 short of the required two-third majority (228 members) due to the stalemate over the PTI members` resignation issue


2. Japan`s relief operation for Turkiye starts from Lahore

• Relief operation by Japan, in collaboration with NATO, for earthquake victims in Turkiye has started from Lahore.
• Japan Air-Self Defence aircraft loaded with relief goods took off from Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore, for Turkiye on March 17.
• The plane transported about 22 tonne relief goods, including 250 tents and 250 winterizing kits manufactured in Pakistan and donated by the UNHCR.
• Japan is conducting this humanitarian assistance operation comprising many airlifts in collaboration with NATO and it will continue for many days


3. Pakistan, others demand greater role for women in technology

• Pakistan called for greater female enrollment in science and technology as the largest UN gathering on gender equality completed its proceedings on March 18, 2023.
• The 2023 Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) successfully wrapped up on Saturday, with member states calling for a full and equal participation of women and girls in the development of digital technologies.
• The week-long gathering, held at the UN headquarters in New York, also released a `blueprint for all stakeholders,` reminding both public and private sectors that denying technical education to women was also a violation of their basic rights.
• Nilofar Bakhtiar, chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women, represented Pakistan at this gathering. `There is an urgent need to raise awareness for greater female enrollment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-related studies and removal of existing gender biases in curricula and parental preferences,` she told a panel of experts


4. Loss-making govt firms borrowed Rs142.3bn

• Rising cost of money has failed to stop the flow of credit to loss-making public sector enterprises (PSEs), as they have borrowed a record Rs142.3 billion this fiscal year so far.
• The 20 per cent policy interest rate has made it impossible for investors to enter new ventures and increased the government`s domestic debt servicing.
• However, loss-making state firms, already causing the economy to bleed, have received record money from banks. The latest data released by the State Bank of Pakistan showed that the credit to state-owned firms reached Rs142.3bn during the first eight months (July to February) of the current fiscal year

5. India says situation with China dangerous in Himalayan front

• The situation between India and China in the western Himalayan region of Ladakh is fragile and dangerous, with military forces deployed very close to each other in some parts, Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said on March 18, 2023.
• At least 24 soldiers were killed when the two sides clashed in the region in mid-2020, but the situation has been calmed through rounds of diplomatic and military talks.
• Violence erupted in the eastern sector of the undemarcated border between the nuclear-armed Asia giants in December but did not result in any deaths.
• `The situation to my mind still remains very fragile because there are places where our deployments are very close up and in military assessment therefore quite dangerous,` Jaishankar said at an India Today conclave

6. Wyoming becomes first US state to outlaw abortion pills

• Wyoming on March 18, 2023 became the first US state to ban the use of abortion pills, the latest salvo in a campaign by conservative-led states to roll back access to abortion.
• After signing the ban on abortion pills, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon appealed to legislators to act further by proposing a total ban on abortion be added to the state constitution and then putting it before voters for approval.
• `I believe this question needs to be decided as soon as possible so that the issue of abortion in Wyoming can be finally resolved, and that is best done with a vote of the people,` the Republican governor said in a statement


7. Serbia, Kosovo leaders hold talks over EU peace plan

• Kosovo and Serbia leaders kicked off the latest round of EU-led talks on March 18, 2023, as the long-time rivals come under increasing pressure to strike a deal to normalise ties.
• The meeting in North Macedonia comes after the two sides failed to reach an agreement in Brussels last month, where the peace plan was unveiled even as Kosovo`s Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic remained at loggerheads over a path forward.
• The 11-point document laid out a deal stating that neither side would resort to violence to resolve a dispute, nor seek to prevent the other from joining the European Union or other international bodies a key demand from Kosovo


8. Turkish foreign minister in Cairo for first time since ties cut a decade ago

• Egypt and Turkiye took another step towards mending relations on March 18, 2023 when Ankara`s top diplomat visited Cairo for the first time since ties were ruptured a decade ago and held talks with his Egyptian counterpart.
• Relations were severely strained in 2013 after Egypt`s then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi led the ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood`s Mohamed Mursi, an ally of Ankara, but have gradually thawed since 2021.
• At a joint news conference with his Turkish counterpart, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said talks with Turkiye on the possibility of restoring ties to ambassadorial level would happen at `the appropriate time`. He said the talks had been `honest, deep and transparent`


9. Pakistan Super League Shaheen-inspired Qalandars are champions again

• The incredible title clash at the Gaddafi Stadium went down to the last ball; the last action being Qalandars skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi whipping off the bails at the non striker`s end to run out Khushdil Shah as his side became the first repeat champions of the Pakistan Super League on Saturday night, defeating Sultans in the final for the second year in a row.
• It was fitting that Shaheen it was who sealed it for his side. The match seemed to have ended as a contest when Shaheen, who was inspirational with both bat and ball when his side needed him the most, picked up three wickets in the 18th over only for Khushdil and Abbas Afridi to keep Sultans` hopes alive

10. Veteran broadcaster Rashid Ashraf passes away

• Veteran author, broadcaster and journalist Syed Rashid Ashraf, known for his long association with BBC Urdu, passed away early on March 18, 2023 morning at his home in the Bromley area of London. He was 91.
• Mr Ashraf joined BBC Urdu in the 60s and remained associated with the publication even after retirement, mentoring young journalists. Born in 1932 in Delhi, Mr Ashraf did his Bachelor of Arts from Dyal Singh College and completed his Master of Arts (MA) in journalism from Punjab University in 1961. Before his journalism degree, Mr Ashraf worked as an interpreter at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. He pursued journalism for a few years, then worked in public relations. In 1966, Mr Ashraf moved to London with the BBC Urdu service, which marked the beginning of his three-decade-long career in broadcasting
