April 302020: National / International Current Affairs
1. Highest number of virus deaths in single day
• As coronavirus cases surpassed the 15,000 mark with the highest number of deaths in a single day, the government on April 29, 2020 decided to bring back 7,500 overseas Pakistanis in the first week of May.
• Moreover, at the request of Afghanistan, the government decided to allow export of non-essential goods along with essential items to the neighbouring country.
• Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on National Security Dr Moeed Yusuf said at a press conference that 26 persons died during the past 24 hours while 44 were in a critical condition. However, he said the mortality rate was only 2.1 per cent in Pakistan as compared to around 7pc in other countries.
2. PIA operation placed under essential service law
• The government on April 29, 2020 enforced the Pakistan Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1952 allowing the Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Limited (PIACL) to rescue, evacuate and repatriate Pakistanis and foreigners stranded in different countries.
• The Act has been implemented with immediate effect and for a period of six months.
• Consequent to the Covid19 pandemic, a large number of Pakistanis and diaspora are still stranded in various countries with expired visas and limited resources, according to a spokesman for PIA.
3. Union councils to cease functioning tomorrow
• The Punjab Local Government and Community Development (LG&CD) department has notified that the defunct union councils shall completely discontinue providing public services and be succeeded by the local government from May 1 (tomorrow).
• All deputy commissioners, being the head of District Transition Team of their respective districts, have been informed about the transition through a notification.
• All the 3,454 [defunct] union councils of Punjab that were constituted under the Punjab Local Government Act 2013, and continued under section 316 (2) of the Punjab Local Government Act 2019, shall discontinue providing public service with effect from May 1, 2020, says the notification.
4. Foreigners in Pakistan get two-month visa extension
• The federal government has extended for two months the validity of visa for foreign nationals stranded in Pakistan due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
• The expired visas will now be treated as valid till June 30.
• According to an official of the Ministry of Interior, the decision has been taken in view of the outbreak of Covid-19 disease and as part of the government`s measures to stop the spread of the deadly virus through `any interaction with the public at large`. The notification is in continuation of the previous one issued in the first week of the current month, extending all types of visas issued to foreign nationals till April 30
5. Guinea-Bissau PM, three ministers test positive for Covid-19
• Guinea-Bissau`s prime minister, Nuno Gomes Nabiam, said on April 29, 2020 he had been infected with coronavirus, as three other ministers in the fragile West African state also tested positive.
• `I have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, I am at home and I feel well, Nabiam said in a Facebook post.
• Adding that the virus `exists and spreads easily, the prime minister urged citizens to stay home and `take every measure to save your life and those of your family`.
6. UN uncovers surprise tools needed to beat virus
• How countries cope with the new coronavirus depends on more than hospital beds and income levels, the United Nations said on April 29, 2020, highlighting forgotten factors like internet access and reliance on tourism.
• The UN Development Programme`s (UNDP) analysis of countries` vulnerability to pandemics produced some surprising results, said its chief statistician Milorad Kovacevic. Small island developing states, such as Jamaica and Haiti, are among the most at risk economically due to their reliance on remittances, tourism and aid, UNDP found, despite the fact they have recorded only a handful of deaths from coronavirus.
• `This may ruin the development achievements that some of these countries had over the last 30 years, Kovacevic said
7. China to reopen Forbidden City
• China`s Forbidden City will reopen on Friday, three months after it closed due to the coronavirus crisis the latest signal that the country has brought the disease under control.
• The sprawling imperial palace sitting across Tiananmen Square was shut down on January 25 as authorities closed tourist attractions and took other extraordinary measures to contain the virus, including locking down an entire province.
• The Palace Museum, which manages the Forbidden City, announced on Wednesday that it will reopen from May 1, with a daily limit of 5,000 visitors down from 80,000 before the pandemic.
8. A slice of the moon for sale
• One of the world`s largest lunar meteorites goes on private sale at Christie`s on April 28, 2020, valued at two million pounds ($2.49 million).
• The moon rock, weighing over 13kg, was probably struck off the surface of the moon by a collision with an asteroid or comet and then showered down on the Sahara desert.
• Known as NWA 12691, it is thought to be the fifth largest piece of the moon ever found on earth. There is just 650kg of moon rock known to be on earth.
9. Indian actor Irrfan Khan loses battle against cancer
• Critically acclaimed movie actor Irrfan Khan lost a brave two-year-long battle with cancer in Mumbai on April 29, 2020, his resolve apparently frayed by the loss of his mother at the weekend whose last rites he could not attend due to the countrywide lockdown.
• He was 53.
• After persistent media speculation over his health during an off-and-on treatment abroad, Irrfan revealed he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour, a rare form of cancer that can target various parts of the body. Reports said he finally succumbed to colon infection with which he was admitted to a Mumbai hospital on Tuesday.
• His wife Sutapa Sikdar and both sons were by his side.
10. ICC slaps ban on Indian owner of T10 franchise
• Indian businessman Deepak Agarwal, who owned a team in the 2018 T10 league, has been banned for two years on corruption charges, the International Cricket Council said on April 29, 2020.
• As a co-owner of the discontinued Sindhis franchise, Agarwal was charged with `obstructing or delaying an investigation`, including concealing, tampering or destroying documents and other information.
• He accepted breaching the ICC anti-corruption code in the event held in the United Arab Emirates, in lieu of an anti-corruption tribunal hearing. Six months of the ban is suspended.
