1. Govt pitches Gwadar as gas transport hub amid Ukraine war

• The government is persuading Europe and China to route their gas supplies from Central Asian nations through Gwadar to ensure their energy security in a changed global environment in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war.
• Minister of State for Petroleum Musadik Malik told that Central Asian states Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan were the global energy capitals. However, because these countries are landlocked, their resources remained trapped and could not be exported to the world, he said.
• The minister said the government had been engaged with Central Asia, European nations, Turkiye, China and even the United States to promote Pakistan as a natural trading hub for natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), more to the economic advantage of those countries as well as benefits flowing to Pakistan as a smaller partner. `We have talked about this with our allies and friendly countries,` he added


2. Punjab govt to hire private anaesthetists for hospitals

• The Punjab caretaker government has decided to acquire services of private anaesthetists for the patients of the state-run hospitals across the province.
• The decision was taken due to the shortage in Punjab`s primary and secondary level government sector hospitals.
• Minister for Primary and Secondary Healthcare Dr Jamal Nasir said his department had introduced anaesthesia management system at tehsil headquarters hospitals of Punjab to help facilitate surgeries.


3. Govt borrows Rs4.6tr in a week

• The government on Wednesday raised over Rs2.4 trillion through the auction of treasury bills, collectively borrowing Rs4.6tr in the last seven days.
• It picked up Rs2.276tr through T-bills and Rs33bn through non-competitive bids.
• The banks offered bids of Rs3.3tr against the auction target of Rs2.25tr.
• The cut-off yields were almost the same but the highest amount of Rs2.222tr was raised for three-month papers at 21.99 per cent. The government raised Rs4.9bn and Rs49.8bn for sixand 12-month papers at 21.97pc and 21.99pc respectively


4. President nominates Justice Isa to become next CJP in September

• Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the most senior judge after the chief justice of Pakistan, is set to become the country`s top judge in three months after President Dr Arif Alvi approved his appointment.
• Justice1sa will don the robes as the 29th chief justice on Sept 17, a day after the incumbent, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, retires after turning 65.
• At the time of retirement, Justice Bandial will have served the top judicial office for over 19 months; he was appointed on Feb 2, 2022, though his notification hadbeenissued on Jan17


5. Gender gap report ranks Pakistan among `bottom 5` countries

• Pakistan is placed at 142 out of 146 countries, the bottom of both the regional and global ranking tables of the Global Gender Gap Report 2023, published by the World E conomic Forum.
• However, the country`s score improved by 5.1 percentage points on the economic participation and opportunities sub-index in the last decade to attain 36.2 per cent parity, though this level of parity remains one of the lowest globally, the report says.This year, Pakistan has been placed near the bottom; only Algeria, Chad, Iran and Afghanistan are below Pakistan. Last year, Pakistan was ranked at 145 out of 146 countries in the ranking tables.
• The WEF report annually benchmarks the current state and evolution of gender parity across four key dimensions: (Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment)

6. Mastercard launches global plan to recycle credit cards

• Payments company Mastercard launched a global project to recycle credit and debit cards as part of a plan to save the billions of cards in circulation across the industry from landfill.
• Initially partnering with British lender HSBC Holdings Plc in eight branches in Britain, Mastercard said banks across the world, some of which have launched local initiatives, would be able to join the programme and help build economies of scale.
• `We are inviting all card issuers around the world to partner with us, no matter what region they are in, and offer card recycling to their customers,` said Ajay Bhalla, president of cyber and intelligence at Mastercard Inc


7. China slams Biden for equating Xi to `dictators`

• China`s foreign ministry slammed comments by US President Joe Biden equating Chinese leader Xi Jinping with `dictators` as an `open political provocation`.
• Speaking at a fundraiser in California on Tuesday, Biden said Xi had been angered over an incident in February when a Chinese balloon which Washington says was used for spying flew over the United States before being shot down by American military jets.
• His comments come just days after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded a visit to Beijing aimed at reestablishing lines of communication in order to avoid conflict between the two global powers


8. Israeli drone strike kills three in West Bank

• Israel`s military killed three members of a `terrorist cell` in a rare West Bank drone strike, the army said, as violence there escalates with at least 13 Palestinians and four Israelis dead this week.
• The army announced the strike after a Palestinian man was killed earlier Wednesday in an occupied West Bank village attacked by hundreds of Israelis.
• Intelligence led Israel Defense Forces (IDF) personnel to identify the cell `inside a suspicious vehicle, after the cell carried out a shooting adjacent to the town of Jalamah`, near Jenin in the northern West Bank, an army statement said


9. Ahsan clinches Asian U-21 snooker

• Ahsan Ramzan, Pakistan`s former world champion, added yet another feather to his cap when he outclassed Iran`s Milad Pourali Darehchi 5-2 in the best-of-nine frames final of the Asian U-21 Snooker Championship in Tehran on Wednesday evening.
• The 17-year-old won the best-of-nine frames final 48-46, 70-5, 61-6, 62-29, 30-71, 55-67, 101-27.
• Earlier, Ahsan brushed aside Tirdad Azadipour, also of Iran, 4-2 in the semi-final with the scores being 76-8, 102-1, 3-66, 75-35, 14-82, 81-14


10. India thrash fatigued Pakistan 4-0 in SAFF Championship opener

• Forced to play less than 12 hours after landing in Bangalore, Pakistan got off to a horror start in their SAFF Championship opener against India but they regrouped and avoided losing by a landslide. It finished 4-0 on Wednesday but it could`ve been worse.
• Goals by Sunil Chettri had seen India go 2-0 up inside the opening 16 minutes their first coming after a dreadful error by goalkeeper Saqib Hanif with Pakistan seemingly suffering from the effects of their long trip from Mauritius.
• The majority of Pakistan`s squad had touched down in Bangalore just seven hours before their Group `A` opener, which the South Asian Football Federation had refused to reschedule, but they held on in pouring rain at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium until Chettri scored his second penalty of the game in the 75th; the goal moving him up to fourth in the all-time international scorers` list
