April 26 2020: National / International Current Affairs
1. Anti-ship missiles fired by Navy hit target
• The Pakistan Navy fleet units demonstrated their combat readiness through live weapon firing of anti-ship missiles in the North Arabian Sea on April 25, 2020.
• The Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi, graced the occasion as chief guest and witnessed the event along with Pakistan Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Asif Khalig and other senior naval officers.
• The weapons firing included anti-ship missiles fired from destroyers and fixed and rotary wing aircraft. The missiles successfully hit their intended target.
2. Official Iftar parties banned
• The Punjab government on April 25, 2020 imposed a ban on holding iftar parties at government expense and decided to use all resources to serve people suffering because of coronavirus pandemic.
• The Punjab government has directed that no provincial minister, administrative secretary or any other functionary will arrange iftar parties spending public money.
• Chief Minister Usman Buzdar in a handout on Saturday said a ban on iftar parties had been imposed to save public money and divert all resources to the service of the people who were facing the worst-ever economic hardships and needed food to survive.
3. Ordinance barring NAB action against certain people lapses today
• As the most crucial ordinance curtailing powers of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) regarding action against businessmen, bureaucrats and politicians promulgated by the government in December last year is lapsing on April 26, 2020 (today) after completing its constitutional 120-day life, the government has decided to introduce a new one to ensure continuity and avoid legal and technical hitches.
• The decision to bring a new ordinance was announced by National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser through his of ficial Twitter account after presiding over a meeting at his residence in this regard here on Saturday.
• The meeting was attended by federal Minister for Law and Justice Farogh Naseem, Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar, newlyappointed Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior Shahzad Akbar.
• Interestingly, the speaker through his tweet first claimed that no decision could be made regarding the fate of the NAB Ordinance in the `consultative meeting` and then in the same tweet declared that `a new amended ordinance will be introduced after consultations with all the stake-holders`
4. International flight operations to remain suspended till May 15
• The government of Pakistan on Saturday extended the suspension of international flight operations till May 15 amid outbreak of coronavirus.
• As per the decision, the suspension of international flight operations has been extended till Friday (May 15). A spokesman for the Aviation Division said the remaining provisions as applicable to the suspension of International flights reflected in the previous orders shall remain unchanged
5. New Punjab CS assumes charge
• Newly-appointed Chief Secretary Punjab Jawwad Rafique Malik assumed charge of his office on April 25, 2020.
• Jawwad Rafique Malik belongs to 15th common of Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS) and was previously posted as Federal Secretary Communication Division.
• He had also served on important positions in Punjab including Senior Member Board of Revenue, Secretary Health, Secretary Local Government, Commissioner Lahore Division, Additional Secretary Home and Director Food Punjab.
6. India reopens neighbourhood stores
• A tentative easing around the world of coronavirus lockdowns gathered pace on April 25, 2020 with the reopening in India of neighbourhood stores that many of the country`s 1.3 billion people rely on for everything from cold drinks to mobile phone data cards.
• In the US, the states of Georgia, Oklahoma and Alaska have begun loosening lockdown orders on their pandemic-wounded businesses, even as the confirmed US death toll from the coronavirus soared past 50,000 and health experts warned that such steps might be coming too soon.
• The relaxation of the Indian lockdown came with major caveats. It did not apply to hundreds of quarantined towns and other places hit hardest by the outbreak that has killed at least 775 people in the country and terrified its multitudes of poor who live in slum conditions too crowded for social distancing
7. Global coronavirus death toll hits 200,000
• Global deaths linked to the coronavirus passed 200,000 on April 25, 2020, while confirmed cases of the virus are expected to hit three million in coming days, according to a credible tally.
• More than half of the fatalities have been reported by the United States, Spain and Italy.
• The first death linked to the disease was reported on Jan 10 in Wuhan, China. It took 91 days for the death toll to pass 100,000 and a further 16 days to reach 200,000, according to the Reuters tally of official reports from governments.
• By comparison, there are an estimated 400,000 deaths annually from malaria, one of the world`s most deadly infectious diseases
8. Sri Lanka reimposes curfew after surge in number of virus cases
• Sri Lanka has reimposed a countrywide 24-hour curfew after a surge in the number of coronavirus cases, most of them navy sailors who were searching for those evading quarantine.
• The 46 new infections on April 24, 2020 were the highest in a day. The Indian Ocean island nation has confirmed 420 cases of the virus, including seven deaths, and has ramped up testing.
• Sri Lanka partially lifted a month long curfew on Monday during daytime hours in more than two thirds of the country.
9. Former Pak captain Sana Mir announces retirement
• Former Pakistan women cricket team captain Sana Mir on April 25, 2020 called it a day on her glittering 15-year cricketing career during which she played 226 internationals, including 137 as captain from 2009 to 2017.
• In a statement issues by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on April 25, 2020, Sana Mir said: “I want to extend my gratitude to the PCB for giving me an opportunity to serve my country for 15 years. It has been an absolute honour and privilege. I extend my gratitude to all the support staff, players, ground staff and everyone behind the scenes for their contribution in my career and development of women’s cricket.
10. Former Australia allrounder Graeme Watson dies at 75
• Graeme Watson, the former Australia allrounder who was battling cancer, has died at the age of 75.
• Primarily a middle-order batsman and a medium-pace bowler, he played five Tests from 1967 to 1972 and two ODIs in 1972.
• After starting his domestic career at Victoria, Watson earned an Australia call-up on the 1966-67 tour of Rhodesia and South Africa as Doug Walters’ replacement. On his debut in Cape Town, the second Test of the series and the only one Australia won, he scored 50 in the first innings. With the ball, he went wicketless in 11 first innings overs, and did not bowl in the second innings after suffering an ankle injury, which ruled him out of the next Test.
